Living in the Languedoc without a car has been incredibly freeing. Cycling opens up new doors and experiences

A “smaller footprint”: Living Car-Free in the South of France

My friend and fellow Le Muguet owner, Lisa, has long championed the idea of a “smaller footprint” during her visits to our fractional properties in France and England.

At first, I listened to her enthusiastic explanations about how to get around the charming town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard and the surrounding area using public transport, by foot, or by train.

I thought, “Hmmm, I’m just not there yet.

Well, guess what? Now that I’ve fully embraced the joys of cycling, I’m “all in,” as they say!

Today marks a significant milestone for me—one month and one day back in the beautiful Languedoc region, living completely car-free and absolutely loving every moment of it.

The freedom of navigating this stunning area on two wheels has truly transformed my experience.

Contemplating Alternatives: The Scooter Idea

Vespa type motorcycle in Europe

In August, I strongly considered buying a Vespa-type motorcycle, thinking it might be the perfect solution for my transportation needs.

I did some research, found a model I liked, and even sought out opinions from friends and fellow travelers.

After careful thought, I came to the conclusion that a scooter could be a fantastic addition to one’s mode of transportation—if you already owned a car.

The Tempting BMW Find

Off to the races again, I started my search for a budget-friendly yet reliable used car. Many of you might already know that I own a stylish vehicle—a truly handsome jet-black PT Cruiser—currently parked back in Tetbury, UK.

I had driven it to France last December, and the journey was not only grueling but also long—taking 13 hours each way. The experience was both exhausting and costly, with gas and tolls amounting to about $350 each way.

Before long, I found a car that seemed to fit my budget and dreams: a charming 1996 BMW 325i convertible with only 60,000 miles on the clock and priced at a mere 2500 euros. It felt like a score!

However, as fate would have it, by the time I researched insurance options and figured out how to transfer the title from the UK to France, someone else had swooped in and “stolen” my dream car. So unfair!

Cycling Freedom: My Perfect Vélo de Route

Slowly, I began to realize that I had nothing to lose by investing in a good “vélo de route” (road bike). I discovered a sweet bike on www.leboncoin.com, and to my delight, the seller was willing to deliver it right to my doorstep from Nimes.

Fifty euros later, off I pedaled, happy as a lark. Truly…gloriously free.

Cycling in Languedoc France

Joys of Cycling in the South of France: My Daily Adventures

Cycling has opened up a whole new world of adventure for me. I’ve found it liberating to explore the stunning landscapes of the Languedoc region on two wheels. While based at my two lovely dwellings, St. Etienne and Le Muguet, I am one very happy car-free gal.

I’ve learned to take the €2 bus whenever I need to travel a bit further, and I can visit friends and do my grocery shopping on my bike with ease.

Additionally, I now have the freedom to travel to our Catalonia on the Sea property via the train for just €1. The thrill of cycling through picturesque villages, discovering hidden gems, and enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean climate has made this experience incredibly rewarding.

Life truly is good when you embrace the simplicity of cycling!

Discovering the Benefits of Fractional Ownership in France

Living car-free is just one of the many benefits of fractional ownership in beautiful locations like Languedoc. It allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, experience the joys of sustainable travel, and share the costs of maintaining a property with others who value this stunning region just as much as you do.

Fractional ownership not only provides you with access to exquisite homes but also allows you to enjoy longer stays, even multiple times a year. Imagine being able to explore the rich history, vibrant markets, and breathtaking landscapes of the South of France at your leisure!
