A note from Ginny at International Property Shares:
We know that buying property abroad can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time. But with over 25 years of experience helping clients like Jere find their ideal fractional home in Europe, we’ve learned how to make the process feel simple, exciting, and personal. This interview highlights the decision process and how IPS can help.

1. What made you consider fractional ownership in the first place?

It all started when I heard about fractional ownership from some neighbors. They’d purchased a share in a home in Vers-Pont-du-Gard, and it sparked something in me. I’d been dreaming of a place in France—initially with my sister—but we had different visions. The idea of fractional ownership gave me an independent path forward.

Honestly, what really nudged me into action was the political environment in the U.S. I found myself craving a different pace, a deeper connection with another culture. France called to me. And for the first time, this kind of dream actually felt doable.

2. What was the beginning of your search like? Any early obstacles?

In the beginning, I explored buying a full property in France. I even spoke with another company. But getting clear answers—or even returned phone calls—proved difficult. Though they were reputable, I started to wonder: If communication is this inconsistent now, what would it be like later on as an owner?

Eventually, I realized that buying and maintaining a full home in France on my own was just too much. That’s when I shifted gears and found International Property Shares (IPS).

3. How did IPS help you clarify what you really wanted?

When I connected with Ginny, things changed. She asked incredibly helpful questions that made me pause and reflect. Things like:

  • Would you be comfortable in a small village?
  • How often do you think you’d visit?
  • Would you be traveling alone or with others?
  • Do you have mobility issues that might make stairs or steep hills challenging?

Her thoughtful approach helped me focus not just on what looked good on paper—but what would actually feel good in real life.

4. What became your must-haves and deal-breakers?

As the search deepened, I stopped worrying about who might join me on trips. I realized I’d likely travel solo most of the time, so I didn’t need a large place.

Living in Florida, I’m used to sunshine, and that was important to me. I’m not a huge wine drinker, so vineyards weren’t a selling point. What mattered more? A sense of connection. Access to nature. And the ability to explore easily—preferably by train.

That’s what drew me to Catalonia By The Sea. It had a train station, Mediterranean views, sunshine, and the kind of outdoor lifestyle I love. Plus, it’s close to Spain, which added another layer of excitement.

5. How did you compare the final options?

At one point, I narrowed it down to two properties—but got stuck. Both had their perks, and I couldn’t decide.

So I called Ginny again. She was patient, open, and willing to walk through everything with me.

But what helped the most? Google Earth. I “walked” through the streets of each village, trying to get a feel for the layout, the steepness of the roads, how connected or isolated each place felt. Since I hadn’t visited either town in person, it was the next best thing—and gave me the insight I needed to move forward.

6. How did virtual exploring help you make a decision?

Being from Florida, I’m used to flat terrain. One hesitation I had about Catalonia was its location in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Driving steep, narrow roads made me nervous.

But when I used Google Earth to explore the town’s layout, it reassured me. I saw walkable streets, charming local cafés, and a manageable town center.

By contrast, the other town I was considering didn’t have the kind of Centre Ville I’d imagined. It had basic amenities, but lacked the vibrancy I was hoping for.

7. What ultimately sealed the deal with Catalonia?

There wasn’t one dramatic “aha” moment—it was a series of small, clear confirmations.

The train station was a big one. Barcelona is just two hours away, with affordable flights. The proximity to the sea and the mountains felt like the best of both worlds. The views were stunning.

And, maybe most importantly, the entire process with IPS just felt right—communicative, thoughtful, and aligned.

8. How does it feel now, owning a share of a home in France?

I’ll be honest: I’m still a little nervous. It’s a big step. But it’s also something I’ve wanted for a long time—and I’m proud I made it happen.

I now co-own a beautiful home with seven others, and I’ll be able to spend 6 or more weeks a year in a place I love. That’s pretty incredible.

I’m most excited about spending slow, meaningful time in France—not just as a tourist, but as someone with a real foothold in the culture.

9. Any advice for someone just starting their journey?

Yes: Take your time. Ask questions. Don’t rush.

Even though fractional ownership is more manageable than full home ownership, it’s still a financial and emotional investment. Make sure it fits your lifestyle—not just your fantasy.

For me, this felt like a soft landing. A gentle way to get started in France and give myself the time to figure out what the future might hold.

Closing Thoughts

Fractional ownership isn’t just about property. It’s about possibility—about crafting a life that blends adventure, access, and affordability.

The process may take some twists and turns, but with the right guidance and a clear sense of what matters to you, it can be incredibly rewarding.

Curious? Ask questions. Explore. And trust your instincts—they’ll tell you when a place feels like home.– Jere Singer
